The book contains up-dated taxonomic knowledge. Against previous usage, the system and keys have been rewritten, above all, in the genera Carabus, Dyschirius (incl. a species new to science described in 1995), Bembidion, and Agonum. Recently described new races are included with Nebria tatrica and Duvalius microphthalmus. The work has been supplemented by new synonyms and data on species distribution. The key is accompanied by 715 pen-and-ink drawings of the critical characters. It comprises 672 species and subspecies in 103 genera and 33 tribes.
